Cylinder Head Resurfacing

CALL US : 281-524-4755
Cylinder head resurfacing can resolve a host of heavy equipment problems. Machine failures such as a blown head or gasket may cause warping of the cylinder head. It becomes uneven and resurfacing ensures that the flat surface remains as it is. Overheating is a major concern in heavy vehicles. Additional heat can cause the cylinder head to expand, and it does not return to its original shape on cooling down. Furthermore, the warping leads to instability in holding the head gasket. This causes leaks, and the issue can escalate very quickly.

When is Resurfacing Required?

Here is a summary of situations that warrant resurfacing of the cylinder head.
  • A failed head gasket
  •  Restoration of flatness or improving polish on the surface
  • Improving the compression ratio following a welding procedure
  • Restoring the altered angle due to an aftermarket intake manifold
  • An overheated engine or a blown-up head gasket can lead to scratching, pitting, or corrosion. It is a frequent problem of high-mileage heads. Resurfacing can resolve the issue.

Signs of a Blown Head Gasket

Keep a watch on the following signs of a blown head gasket.
    Picture
    • The exhaust emits thick white smoke.
    • You notice a rough idling noise coming from the engine. The overall performance of the engine may also slow down.
    • The engine oil may appear milky if the coolant or antifreeze keeps leaking into the oil return passages.
    • An overheated engine is a common symptom of a blown head gasket. Appearance of bubbles in the radiator is also an usual sign. These signs occur when the gases from the combustion chamber escape into the cooling system.
    • The oil or coolant may leak through a crack in the gasket seal. So, you may observe a small pool of liquid on the garage floor when you take out the vehicle.

Entrust Us with the Resurfacing Work

Our Sugar Land repair shop has access to the specific tools necessary for resurfacing aluminum heads. This work requires careful attention to several key aspects. Here are some of the parameters that need to be considered.
    • Aligning the table feed and the rpm
    • Using proper equipment such as the multi-speed milling head
    • Setting the appropriate RPM for a smooth finish
    • Setting the proper feed rate
Just how smooth should the finished surface be? A smooth finish prevents leakage, but over-smoothing can also cause problems. We recommend that the surface of graphite head gaskets should be within 30 RA. The staffs at our Sugar Land workshop are friendly and knowledgeable. You can also use our online diagnostics tool to detect vehicle problems so that we can proceed quickly with the repairs work.
